The NunatuKavut Community Council has launched an online petition calling on Memorial University to drop its draft Indigenous verification policy.
NCC President Todd Russell says the policy is specifically designed to exclude any person who is a citizen of NunatuKavut.
He says they are in a formal rights-based negotiation process with the federal government and their people are recognized by governments, courts and commission and by the university itself through the Labrador Campus constitution.
A consultation process on the draft policy is currently underway and wraps up May 2nd.
The policy aims to address concerns raised about the need to go “beyond self-identification for people that were looking for Indigenous-specific opportunities” and access to programs according to MUN’s vice-president (Indigenous) Catharyn Andersen.
