President Donald Trump says Canada would “cease to exist” without the United States.
Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office yesterday, Trump hinted at a possible increase to the 25 per cent tariff on Canadian auto imports.
The President claims his country doesn’t need Canada, but Canada needs the United States.
“Ninety-five per cent of Canada, what they do is buy from us, and they sell to us.” He says the U.S. doesn’t need Canadian products such as oil, lumber and cars.
Trump repeated claims that the U.S. is subsidizing Canada, and it would be much easier if the country became the 51st state.
“Why are we spending $200 billion to support and subsidize another country? Because if they didn’t have us, and if we didn’t spend that money, as Trudeau told me, they would cease to exist. He (former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau) said that to me. They would cease to exist, it’s true.”
When asked about the upcoming federal election, Trump declined to comment, only to say he has had good conversations with Prime Minister Mark Carney.
