The town of Harbour Grace is offering a $25,000 reward for the safe return of the statue of Amelia Earhart removed from the Spirit of Harbour Grace park earlier this week.
Mayor Don Coombs says they’ve received donations from the public, including a $10,000 donation from NewCo Metal, and a $3,000 donation from Mark Cooper Law Firm.
“We just want her back” says Coombs.
The fear is that the thieves made off with the statue to melt her down. The statue, which was created by sculptor Luben Boykov, was donated to the town by Roger Pike.
It was removed from the park early Thursday morning. The culprits were caught on surveillance camera leaving the site around 2:45 Thursday morning, speeding up Jamie’s Way toward the Veteran’s Memorial Highway in what appears to be a red SUV.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Harbour Grace RCMP at (709) 596-5014, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or the Town of Harbour Grace at (709) 596-3631.
