The opposition PC’s wants to see greater action taken in addressing the Baltic III.
Environment critic Lela Evans says the vessel has the potential to become another Manolis L, a paper carrier that sank in Hamilton Sound in the 1980s after leaving Botwood with a load of newsprint.
The vessel sat on the bottom for decades before oil started leaking from it, prompting a massive underwater cleanup effort that wrapped up in 2018.
Evans says the environment sustains us all, and that means any environmental impact from the Baltic III.
“What’s the plan, and what’s the timelines?” Evans wants to know. “People are concerned that there’s not much action,” on-site.
Evans claims there is very little activity at the stie and no plan or update has been released to the public from the salvage company involved in the work. She says if the vessel should break up, the environmental disaster would devastate the region’s fishing and tourism industries.
