Today marks the National Day of Mourning, a time set aside to bring attention to workers who have suffered injury or lost their lives due to their work.
Last year in Newfoundland and Labrador, 26 people lost their lives due to their work—15 from occupational disease and 11 as a result of fatal incidents according to Workplace NL. The agency says in the past five years, 124 workers lost their lives.
Workplace NL is encouraging people to pause for a moment of silence and commit to workplace safety. Ann Martin, CEO, says April 28 is also a call to renew their focus on building safer, healthier workplaces and to prevent future tragedies.
