The president of NAPE is calling for more to be done after he says there was an increase in workplace fatalities in the province last year.
Today is a National Day of Mourning, dedicated to those who have lost their lives or suffered injuries at work.
According to Workplace NL, there were 26 work-related fatalities in the province in 2024. fifteen were from occupational disease while 11 were the result of fatal accidents. In the past 5 years, they say 124 workers in the province have lost their lives.
NAPE President Jerry Earle says those numbers indicate that there is much more work to be done.
He says labour unions and governments need to come together and figure out ways to lessen the impact. Earle states that they shouldn’t be looking at an increase in numbers, they should be looking at the elimination of workplace fatalities all together.
