The Town of Harbour Grace has received a number of tips related to the bizarre and bold theft of its beloved statue of Amelia Earhart.
The town is offering up a $25,000 reward for the safe return of the bronze statue of the world-famous aviator, who flew from Harbour Grace on her historic trans-Atlantic solo flight in 1932.
On Friday, a number of businesses and concerned citizens came together, along with the town, to put together the reward—$10,000 of which is being offered by NewCo Metals, which is keeping an eye out for anything suspicious.
The town, and the province, were shocked when the statue suddenly disappeared last week, just days after historic plaques at the same site were removed.
A makeshift memorial to the missing statue popped up at the site on the weekend, with a flower and ribbon placed where Earhart’s bronze likeness once stood, and someone placing rocks on the empty platform spelling out ‘I love you.’
Mayor Don Coombs says all the information received has been passed on to RCMP and he’s hopeful the statue can be returned.
