Opposition MP Clifford Small says federal fisheries minister Joanne Thompson will “have her hands full” in dealing with the Prime Minister’s Office.
Thompson was reinstated to the portfolio during Tuesday’s swearing-in ceremony in Ottawa.
Small, who represents Central Newfoundland, cites the difficulties faced by her predecessors.
He says the seven fisheries ministers under the Liberal government have had to follow “what’s been laid out for them by the Prime Minister’s Office in terms of the environmental aspects and extreme conservation measures and what not.”
“So if Minister Thompson is going to have the back of the fishing industry in Newfoundland and Labrador and Atlantic Canada, she’s going to have to stand up very strongly to those who have been oppressing that industry.”
