A local professor is hopeful that research being conducted at Memorial University will help build a whole new carbon-capture sector in the province.
Lesley James is studying how to take carbon dioxide and inject it into rock deep beneath the ocean, as well as what happens afterward.
“What happens to the CO₂? Are we changing the properties of the rocks? Do we have rocks that are suitable for CO₂ storage? Because what we’re talking about isn’t a big tank underground—it’s actually inside the pores of rock. So how do we inject CO₂ into those rocks, how much can we inject, and where is it going to go? That’s what we want to study.”
Memorial has received $3 million in provincial government funding to explore carbon capture and storage, in addition to more than $6.7 million provided by Hibernia and Hebron.
