Our two police forces wrote out a lot of tickets on the highway just outside St. John’s yesterday.
True to their word, the RNC and RCMP stepped up enforcement on this, the first long weekend of summer.
Police issued 51 tickets for speeding and seized three vehicles. Two drivers were nabbed for excessive speed.
The combined checkpoint was in operation from about 12:30 until 5:30 in the afternoon.
Cst. James Cadigan of the RNC says they will continue with stepped-up enforcement all summer.
He doesn’t have statistics in terms of the number of traffic infractions being recorded, but says all they need to know is that illegal driving habits continue to endanger everyone on the road.
“We are detecting unsafe, dangerous behavior on our highways, so if you’re going to operate a vehicle in a dangerous manner, you can expect to be stopped by the RNC or get a call from us or to be reported by somebody in the community,” says Cadigan.
