The expansion of the province’s Continuous Glucose Monitoring Program is part of government’s plan to become “Canada’s healthiest province.”
Government is opening up the Continuous Glucose Monitoring Program to all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians living with type 1 diabetes.
Minister Krista Lynn Howell expects that will affect some 4,600 people, helping them with blood glucose monitoring and reducing the cost associated with diabetes management.
Continuous Glucose Monitors are worn by the patient and continuously track blood glucose levels and provide information that can be accessed on a smart phone.
Financial assistance will be determined using the same income-testing used for the Insulin Pump Program.
Howell says it’s all part of government’s overall plan to improve health outcomes across the province.
“All individuals who are currently part of our NL Insulin Pump Program will be covered for Continuous Glucose Monitoring,” says Howell. She says government has set the goal of becoming Canada’s healthiest province.

Provincial government is expanding its continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) program to include everyone living with type 1 diabetes.
Starting this fall, those who meet medical and income criteria will be able to access full or partial coverage for CGMs.
The expansion means roughly 4,600 people in the province will have access to the devices which allows diabetics to monitor their blood sugar 24/7 without finger pricks.
Health Minister Krista Lynn Howell and endocrinologist Dr. Zaina Albalawi will speak about the expansion at Confederation Building at 11:45.
VOCM News will be there.
