Bell Island RCMP are asking the public to avoid the area surrounding the Bell Island airstrip after an apparent military artillery shell was found in the ocean by local fishermen on Saturday.
RCMP removed the item and secured it at a remote location near the airstrip, where it is being closely monitored until specialists can safely dispose of it.
While there is no known risk to public safety, RCMP are taking precautionary measures and continue to monitor the area.
The public is urged to stay clear of the airstrip until further notice.
