Labrador MHA Lisa Dempster says the existing Henry Gordon Academy in Cartwright is long past its best-before date.
Government announced earlier this week that it awarded the contract for its replacement at an estimated cost of $38.4 million.
She described the building as “boxy” and “put together in bits and pieces.”
The building isn’t accessible, and she says it’s become a real issue.
“I remember going there years ago, 12 years ago, when I was actually a new MHA in that area and there was one particular student with a disability and having to do so many steps up and down. That image has stayed with me,” she told VOCM News.
The contract includes construction of the school and housing for teachers; abatement and demolition of the old school and development of a new parking lot and sports field.
