DFO says it has found no evidence of harm to the habit after reviewing a report alleging that fish-farming companies were stashing garbage along Newfoundland’s south coast.
Earlier this week, the Atlantic Salmon Federation published a report accusing aquaculture companies of disposing of plastic waste off the coast.
Keith Sullivan, the executive director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Aquaculture Industry Association, says the industry is heavily regulated, and all companies in this province have financial sureties to combat bad actors.
“They’re knowingly pushing out incorrect and knowingly wrong information about the sector here,” Sullivan told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly.
“Like the farming sector is managed, I mean, there are extremely robust requirements from the Aquaculture Act regulations and layers of policies to licensing conditions. So you’ve got to have a waste management plan in place.”
