Metro police are warning the public of a dangerous drug detected in a pill sold on the illicit market.
The drug, phenazolam, is connected through laboratory testing to a sudden death in March on the northeast Avalon. Health Canada has confirmed that a pill presenting as xanax is actually phenazolam, a “benzo.”
The RNC say there are significant concerns with regard to combinations of benzos with opioids, known as benzo-dope. Taking them together increases the risk of overdose and death.
Nalaxone, which is commonly used to counteract the effects of opioids an prevent overdose, has no effect in such situations.
Police recommend that people who are using street drugs avoid benzo-dope altogether, not to use drugs alone, and to leave the door unlocked and have somebody check on them.
