A body safety program for kids in the K-9 system is being introduced this school year.
Called “Kids in the Know,” the program, which uses puppets as props, is currently offered in all K-3 classrooms in the province, but will be expanded to grades 4-9 next month, beginning with training for teachers and others in the school system.
Bev Moore-Davis, a survivor of child abuse, helped develop the program. She says it’s critical for children to have a safe place. School was her safe haven.
“Unfortunately, this program was not available for me as a child, and I can’t go back and undo that. But we can go forward and I believe this will change the lives of children and the entire province. I can’t thank Minister Bernard Davis enough,” she said.
One component of the program emphasizes the need to reveal the abuse to someone, even if that person is a stranger. Many incidents of child abuse are committed by someone known to the victim.
