A group of business leaders is urging Premier John Hogan to forge ahead and do the final agreements with Quebec on hydro development in Labrador.
Former politicians, including Premier Danny Williams, believe the pending hydro deal on Gull Island and Churchill Falls will amount to the worst give-away in the province’s history. However, nine big-time business people disagree, and have told Premier Hogan that this is the time to make Newfoundland and Labrador better for today. and for generations to come.
They say it’s time to move beyond the 1969 Upper Churchill agreement, which gives Quebec nearly all of the revenue, and the Muskrat Falls project, which ended up costing double the initial estimate.
They say it’s a fair and balanced deal that will immediately deliver billions of dollars to the province.
Calvin Ash, Fred Cahill, Brian Dalton, Robert Patten, Peter Woodward, AnnMarie Boudreau, Mark Dobbin, Sean Leet and Derek Purchase say the MOU also positions Newfoundland and Labrador for long-term success.
