The PCs are promising to expand skilled trades courses in high schools across the province.
Currently, the program is offered as an elective in several schools – but not all – according to the Tories.
According to the Council of Ministers of Education, 103 high schools are equipped for Skilled Trades classes, which is nearly 75 per cent.
Speaking to reporters at the Trades NL Conference in St. John’s today, Leader Tony Wakeham would not disclose how much the program would cost, but says it’s needed given the number of large projects ready to build.
“We had it before, and it’s worked very effectively in other provinces,” he told reporters.
“So when we start to look at this, and how do we get people interested? So offering the skilled trades, we know we have a skilled trades shortage of workers, so let’s start in high school for kids that may be interested in pursuing those programs.”
