A volunteer group which helps the victims of natural disasters pick up the pieces – quite literally – has been on the ground on the Conception Bay North Shore for the last few months.
Team Rubicon is comprised of volunteers representing veterans, first responders, emergency management personnel and ordinary citizens.
Formed in Canada in 2016 in response to the wildfires in Fort McMurray, Team Rubicon set up operations in Newfoundland and Labrador after the fire in Adam’s Cove in May.
The group, which uses GPS to identify homes, helped sort through the ashes to find cherished belongings from war medals to photo albums.
Provincial lead for Team Rubicon in Newfoundland and Labrador, Matthew Barron, conducted disaster mapping after the fires, and coordinated the on-the-ground effort involving three separate waves of volunteers.
Among the items they’ve looked for and have found are “gold, medals, World War II medals…Christmas ornaments,” or items that were held as keepsakes of deceased loved-ones. “Anything that was special to that person, is what we would find, and that varies as much as every person varies.”
