The MHA for Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair says a recent meeting between Opposition caucus members and the executive team at IOC helped to instill greater confidence in the company’s operations in Labrador West.
The Liberal members expressed concern about the company’s global restructuring which saw the elimination of some jobs in this province.
Lisa Dempster says they’ve since learned from company executives that the company is looking at ways to get rid of 100 million tonnes of mining waste.
She says they were assured by company officials that IOC has a “solid plan” and will be moving the waste into areas that have already been mined.
“I certainly heard the commitment” says Dempster “to continue to build strong relations with the company, investing in housing partnerships…where they can, to ensure that the work continues in that community, and not the fly-in, fly-out, which is always a fear for people when we hear of changes on the radar.”
