A Newfoundland man who has two retired police dogs as his house pets believes that there should be a national standard when it comes to services and care provided to the animals in their post-work life.
Jim Hynes owns Kaos, who used to be a K-9 officer with the RCMP, and Dali, who was with the RNC.
Hynes told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that the dogs don’t live a long life after moving on from law enforcement as their medical issues can be significant.
Hynes says he gets great financial support from the RNC for their former K-9 officer, but not the RCMP.
A bag of dog food for Kaos costs about $220 as it has to be a special food because of medical issues.
“I’ve spent over $5,000 on him since I got him, but he is healthy now,” says Hynes. “These dogs live only an average of two years after retirement and I think it’s shameful that the RCMP doesn’t do more to support them.”
