The St. John’s Regional Fire Department has started issuing PFAS-free bunker gear to its members, which was announced last year.
The protective clothing, worn by firefighters during emergencies, traditionally contained PFAS chemicals, valued for their resistance to water, oil, and heat. The Department says switching to PFAS-free gear addresses growing concerns about long-term health risks linked to these substances.
The rollout of the new gear began over the last couple of weeks and is part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to keep its members safe.
