The council lead for Public Works says private contracts to help clear snow and widen streets in some St. John’s neighbourhoods have had to be extended, but the final cost won’t be clear for some time.
The city last week awarded three contracts totaling $3.5-million to help clear higher elevations like Southlands, Kenmount Terrace and Airport Heights.
It was hoped that the work could be completed by today, but that work is expected to continue for at least a few more days, and whether that results in greater cost, remains to be seen.
“It’s for curb to curb” says councillor Greg Noseworthy, “it’s less of a defined science and more of an art to make sure we’re opening these roads.”
In the meantime, Noseworthy says the city-wide on-street parking ban continues and he’s urging residents to remove vehicles that may impede ongoing snowclearing efforts.
