More trial dates have been set for a serial sex offender accused of committing indecent acts while doing time at HMP.
Thirty-five-year-old Stephen Hopkins has been in custody at the Pen since 2020 for sexually assaulting a teenage girl after forcing his way into her Cowan Heights home.
But while incarcerated he’s been repeatedly charged with committing indecent sex acts in front of guards, staff and other prisoners.
He was first charged with offences in 2023, then additional incidents in the summer of 2024, and then again in January of last year.
Hopkins, who continues to insist on representing himself, now has two separate trials scheduled for Supreme Court in May and November of this year.
But during yet another eventful appearance in court this week, a rambling Hopkins indicated he wanted both trials collapsed into one, before relenting and agreeing to keep the November dates in place, just in case.
The St. John’s man, deemed a long-term offender, is serving a six-and-a-half-year sentence for the attack on the girl in 2020.
Hopkins’ first trial for the alleged offences at HMP is set for five days in May.
