The coach of the St. John’s Junior Caps is offering comment following a serious situation that unfolded at the Goulds Arena Saturday night during a game between his team and the Southern Shore Junior Breakers.
Videos are circulating online of a number of altercations between players on the ice, but Coach Steve Callahan says the situation extended beyond the ice.
He says the Junior Caps came prepared to play – hoping to sweep the quarter final and season series against the Junior Breakers, however a large number of young people entered the building through the arena’s side doors.
Callahan claims the crowd was loud and antagonistic. He alleges threats were made toward Caps players.
He says a large crowd gathered by the Junior Caps dressing room, causing “legitimate concern” for player safety.
Callahan says he will not be offering any further comment on the incident which the St. John’s Junior Hockey League says is under investigation.
The league says “severe suspensions” will be issued for what it calls “unacceptable” behaviour.
