The leader of the NDP is pulling no punches when it comes to the Auditor General’s scathing report on social housing in the province.
The report, which was released on Wednesday, paints a grim picture of the way the situation has been handled by government and the crown corporation, Newfoundland and Labrador Housing.
It outlines a multitude of issues relating to general mismanagement of the system, including a 71 per cent increase in waitlists over a four-year period, and maintenance issues.
‘A mess’ says NDP Leader Jim Dinn
Jim Dinn, who has long criticized government’s handling of housing, was blunt in his assessment of the situation.
“Purely put it’s a God damn mess.”
The report covers the period of April 2021 to June 2025, a time when the Liberals were in power.
When asked about the report, former Liberal Premier John Hogan indicated that he hadn’t seen it yet, but mentioned how renovations are part of the process, should be done “sooner rather than later.” He also believes government should expand its housing stock.)
Dinn calls those comments “bullshit.”
Dinn says the Liberals did not address housing issues during their time in office.
“They’ve lied. They lied to us, and yet I was the one that lost my speaking privileges for calling them out on that and using the word “lie” in the House of Assembly when they weren’t delivering on their promises.”
