The Heavy Civil Association of Newfoundland and Labrador has launched a new subsidized training program for high school students to help get them into the industry.
Executive Director Kris Mulcahy says businesses are telling them that they are seeing entry-level skill gaps, and there are “supervisory bottlenecks.”
Hey says the purpose of the program is to create a pathway that would help address some of those issues.
Mulcahy says the course, which is one week long, serves as the first step for their heavy crew member certification.
He says participants will do things like powerline hazards trenching, level one flag person training, and learn how to work around heavy equipment – all of which are courses people would need to enter a job site anyway. He says participants will be able to “hit the ground running.”
