Hospitality NL is training hotel staff on human trafficking and what to watch for to alert authorities.
It’s part of a “Not in Our Hotel” national initiative.
Craig Foley of HNL says hotel guests and visitors may not be aware of the signs, but hotel staff are in a position to notice trends and repeat behaviours that could indicate that human trafficking is happening.
“You’ll see patterns when you’re there,” says Foley. “People who are there all the time will see the same faces. Things like paying cash, these are all things that the training will tune an employee in to say ‘what’s going on?’”
Foley says it’s not about hotel staff doing investigative work, but about recognizing and reporting issues to authorities when the signs are there.
