The RCMP are cautioning the public after cannonballs were discovered at a home in Jerseyside.
On Monday, the Provincial Archeologist contacted police to report that several cannonballs were uncovered during renovations at a home in the town, which is adjacent to a known archeological site.
The RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit was called in to safely remove and dispose of the items.
Police say that while cannonballs are typically made of hard steel, they can be hallow inside and filled with an explosive black powder.
They caution that because of Newfoundland and Labrador’s military history, such items have been discovered all over the province and can be extremely dangerous. They say cannonballs should be reported to police the same as any other possible munition.
