MUNSU says it will work with CHMR to ensure that the station stays in its current location and that the decision to cut union funding does not mean that the station will close.
MUNSU President Nathan Gillingham says the union will no longer spend labour time to broadcasting, programming, news reading, production or other on-air activities as of June 1st, and effective August 31st, CHMR-FM will cease as a service of MUNSU.
Gillingham says the funding decision does not necessarily mean the closure of CHMR.
“The two dollar media levy all undergraduate students pay on a semesterly basis, amounting to about $50,000 a year, will still be collected for operational purposes of the radio station.”
“The space CHMR occupies currently falls under the MUNSU lease agreement, and we remain fully co-operative for them to remain in this space.”
He says going forward, CHMR will have an opportunity to be an independent media centre for students and the community and he hopes that recent support will be channeled into “continuing to have a fully-functioning space and service.”
