Easter Monday marks a solemn occasion in Irish history; the failed Easter Rising of 1916 when Irish Republicans rose up against British rule.
The six day uprising saw hundreds seize buildings and institutions, only to be quashed by thousands of British forces.
Sixteen rebel leaders were executed and hundreds of lives were lost, but the incident is often seen as the beginning of a movement that eventually led to the creation of the Irish Republic.
Local historian and author Michael Boyle has marked the occasion each Easter Monday at Colonial Building for the last 20 years with a proclamation reading.
“It spurred the Irish Nation,” says Boyle. “It’s a very important event.”
The gathering is set for noon Monday outside Colonial Building.
