GreenShield Health and Dental has approved the renewal of MUN’s Graduate Students’ Union’s health and dental plan for September of 2026.
There were concerns that the Graduate Students Union might be dissolved due to financial mismanagement and significant debt owed to other organizations.
The GSU owed $1.6 million to Greenshield, and another $350,000 to the Canadian Federation of Students.
An agreement has also been reached that includes a structured repayment plan with no fee increase for students, although health and dental coverage will see slight reductions.
The Canadian Federation of Students says the approved plan will allow the GSU to repay its outstanding debt over a four year period.
CFS-NL Chair Nicolas Keough says there was a real concern that more than 2500 students and their dependents could lose their insurance, but the plan will allow the union to continue on a path to debt repayment and financial sustainability.
