The federal government has released the results of its survey on the recreational cod fishery off Newfoundland and Labrador.
The highest percentage of respondents to the survey were in this province.
More than 9,500 surveys were completed with people strongly in favour of a longer season – more days, and not being limited to weekends and Mondays.
Close to 60 per cent want to have the fishery open all week during the summer while, 15 per cent would prefer to see a variety of dates that includes weekdays.
About two-thirds support a higher bag limit, while one-third are satisfied with the current limits.
Nearly everyone who answered the survey indicated that they had encountered bad weather while participating in the fishery at some point.
There is no significant appetite for some type of reporting measure for the number of fish caught.
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson, the MP for St. John’s East, will use the feedback in drafting this year’s management plan.
