The provincial government is aware of Ottawa’s plans to double Canada’s electricity grid capacity by 2050.
The Department of Energy says it is in routine contact with the federal government on “multiple important issues.”
The Prime Minister yesterday indicated that Ottawa will offer a refundable tax credit as an incentive for Quebec to accelerate its $145 billion hydro expansion plans.
The provincial government is reserving comment on the Prime Minister’s announcement until the public release of the review panel’s report this coming Tuesday.
The opposition calls Prime Minister Mark Carney’s plans to double Canada’s electricity grid by 2050, a “timely opportunity” for the province to continue negotiations with Hydro Quebec.
Leader John Hogan discussed the matter with the Prime Minister while serving as premier last year.
He says Carney “understood the value” of the natural resource “and the partnership with Quebec.”
Hogan is encouraging Premier Tony Wakeham to continue negotiations with Hydro Quebec, and says advancing the project “would open the door for meaningful federal contributions to a shovel ready project.”
