A 60-year-old man is facing charges after a spike belt had to be deployed to stop a car that twice failed to pull over for police.
Officers on patrol in Avondale last Friday afternoon first spotted a car speeding in the area of the Conception Bay Highway and Station Road and attempted to pull it over.
Instead of stopping, the driver sped away in what police say was a reckless manner. Officers would not pursue in the interest of public safety.
RCMP from Holyrood, Ferryland and Highway Traffic East conducted patrols in surrounding communities and located the car in Conception Harbour. Another attempt was made to pull the car over but once again, it sped away.
A spike belt was deployed along Harbour Drive and the car eventually came to a stop on Big Pond Road where the driver was taken into custody.
David Halleran, who police say was in violation of a release order and was wanted by Bay Roberts RCMP on an outstanding warrant is now charged with dangerous driving, and flight from police.
The new charges again Halleran include:
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle – two counts,
- Flight from police – two counts,
- Failure to comply with conditions of a release order.
