Civil hearings for St. John’s Grand Falls-Windsor and Stephenville have resumed – including settlement conferences, payment hearing and pre-trial applications.
The provincial court offered the update earlier this week.
The services had originally been suspended back in November.
Justice Minister Helen Conway Ottenheimer says it’s the first step in getting the court system back on track, but she was unable to remark on backlogs or the schedule moving forward, citing the autonomy of the court system.
The minister says government is continuing to consult with the working group set up after the courts were closed late last year.
She says the systemic issues affecting the court system didn’t start overnight, and she’s optimistic, given the additional funding provided in the recent budget, that they’re on the road to more improvements.
