The mayor of St. John’s says it is still “too early to tell” if taxes will increase in the capital city next year.
Budget preparations are currently underway. The city typically tables its budget by mid-December.
A few weeks ago, council approved a new tentative agreement with CUPE local 1289, but some on council voted against it with councilor Tom Davis expressing concern that the cost of the wage increases would be downloaded onto residents.
Danny Breen says council’s goal is to keep mil rates at their current levels.
Breen does note, however, that the city has managed its expenses and has found success in the last couple of years in maintaining expense levels. Breen says even though these are “inflationary times,” they are looking at ways to keep expenses low while offering services that residents are used to.
