The President of the NunatuKavut Community Council is pleased that all three candidates in the riding of Labrador have confirmed their commitment to primary search and rescue in the region.
Labrador, and the entire province, was rocked by the loss of Marc Russell and Joey Jenkins when their vessel the Island Lady suddenly disappeared while fishing off the southeast coast of Labrador in 2021.
Marc’s mother Jeannette channeled her grief into leading the call for a primary search and rescue base in Labrador.
NCC President Todd Russell, who is Marc’s uncle, says the region is “vastly underserved” and the infrastructure and search and rescue readiness in Labrador is nowhere near the standard on the island or anywhere else in Atlantic Canada.
He welcomes commitments made by Liberal candidate Philip Earle, and the NDP’s Marius Normore on establishing a SAR base in Labrador if elected, and the Conservative’s Ella Wallace for acknowledging the importance of marine rescue and her pledge to explore viable solutions.
