Last year was the best one for aquaculture production in the province.
The fish farming industry moved over $280-million worth of product in 2024 according to the association which represents the companies.
Keith Sullivan, the executive director of the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association, says a federal proposal to establish a marine protected area on the southwest coast would effectively shut down any plans for future growth of fin fish farming.
He says it’s the ideal location – most conducive place on the island to do fin fish farming.
“That’s the area that we would look to grow,” says Sullivan.
