A non-profit focused on helping the pride community is concerned about fears surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump and changes in the Alberta education system, which has removed some LGBTQ+ books.
Ailsa Craig with Quadrangle NL describes it as a “frightening” situation that can topple years of work with one piece of legislation.
She says that the pride community becoming more visible creates an opportunity for them to be targeted.
“What we’ve built can so quickly be taken away, and the ways that we’ve become visible can sometimes feel like we’ve now, (become) easier for us to be targeted,” Craig told VOCM News.
She notes policy change can be reversed in an instant, but cultural change can last a long time.
