An oil industry veteran says the new minister of energy will have a broad file to get up to speed.
Andrew Parsons, who had been in the portfolio for several years, stepped down a few months ago with the reigns being handed to Steve Crocker. But he is also bowing out of provincial politics, leaving the energy sector without a minister who is well versed in the sector.
With an election likely coming on or before October 14, it’s unlikely that anyone will have a firm handle on that role much before the new year.
Rob Strong notes there are several key files including the development of a benefits and taxation agreement for Bay du Nord, and how to get the 10-trillion cubic feet of natural gas off our shores into the mix.
He says all industry wants certainty and wants to know the rules of the game.
“I hope the new minister, whoever he or she may be, has the background to tackle some of these issues,” says Strong.
