MNL admits overlapping provincial and municipal elections can be a bit of a challenge, but it’s nothing new.
The President of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, Amy Coady, observes that the electorate is being bombarded with a plethora of signs in every size and colour, possibly adding to confusion about who’s who and what they’re running for.
She says they’ve been talking to municipal candidates about using signs that don’t use the colours associated with the three major parties – red, blue and orange, however some candidates are re-using signs from past campaigns that may use those colours. Complicating matters are former mayors, deputy mayors and councilors whose names are known, but are now taking a stab at provincial politics.
She says overlapping elections can also mean that provincial matters could overshadow municipal issues.
“Of course the media is going to focus on the provincial which is the higher level of government, but MNL has done what it can through the Make Your Mark and the Youth for Council campaign to bring greater attention to municipal matters.”
