The St. John’s Regional Fire Department is urging people to be aware of the risks of lithium-ion batteries during Fire Prevention Week which starts tomorrow.
“Charge into Fire Safety” is the theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week, highlighting the importance of buying, charging and recycling lithium-ion batteries safely.
Almost all rechargeable equipment uses lithium-ion batteries, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, headphones, power tools, toys, and lawn tools.
If not used correctly, or if damaged, lithium-ion batteries can overheat, start a fire, or even explode.
The fire department advises that in order to reduce risk, buy only products that contains a label from a nationally-recognized testing lab, such as ULC, on the packaging and the product.
Many products sold online and in stores may not meet safety standards, increasing the risk of fire.
The St. John’s Regional Fire Department also advises people to use the charging cable that came with their device. If you need a new charger, buy one directly from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved.
Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged, and recycle lithium-ion batteries responsibly. Don’t throw them in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could catch fire. Instead, bring them to a safe battery recycling location.
