A student doing first-year math at Memorial University is not convinced that changes to the program come September will be a good thing.
Memorial, faced with financial pressure and a significant drop in enrollment, is expanding class size in first-year math, changing times to 8:00 in the morning and 5:00 pm, and cutting most of the contractual teachers, replacing them with faculty.
Kayleigh Aylward of Gander Bay, who is taking two math courses, believes those changes will negatively affect the student experience and outcomes.
She says you need time in the morning for your brain to wake up and expect students to still be fully alert for another class at night is asking a bit much.
She also says she switched from a class being taught by a faculty member to one led by a contractual professor, an experience which has resulted in a much improved outcome.
Aylward hopes to become a math teacher in rural Newfoundland.
