A new Angus Reid survey shows, not surprisingly, that Canadians already struggling to make ends meet are more concerned than ever about the rising cost of living .
Close to 70 per cent of Canadian households earning less than $50,000 a year say the rising cost of living is their top priority. That’s the highest rate in three and a half years according to Angus Reid’s Jon Roe.
The cost of living has been the top issue that Canadians have said is facing the country since basically September of 2022 – it’s gone up and down a little bit, but been very between 55 per cent and 60 per cent of Canadians say that’s the top issue facing the country.” He says “it’s been very consistent…despite the fact that inflation has cooled somewhat…but Canadians are still feeling the effects of those price increases.”
That pressure is also being reflected in voter intentions according to the latest survey results.
Those facing high financial pressure are twice as likely to say they would vote Conservative (53 per cent) than Liberal at (27 per cent) if an election were held today.
Those facing low financial pressure are more likely to vote Liberal if an election were held today.
The Liberals lead in voter intention in NL, British Columbia, Quebec and the rest of the Atlantic provinces, while the Conservatives have a two-to-one advantage of the Liberals in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Local MP says constituents are struggling
The MP for Central Newfoundland says the struggle is real and is coming at Newfoundlanders and Labradorians from all directions.
Clifford Small says he’s hearing from many constituents feeling the pinch.
“Mostly seniors, families, working class people who are maybe not as established as some of the baby boomers…I’m going around the riding and I’m hearing it all the time. The price of food keeps going up, up, up, and people are really struggling. ”
“For those who are commuting to work, the added expense of the cost of fuel is staggering.” Small also took note of the added costs to the trucking industry which will also contribute to rising costs in stores.”
