The provincial government says it is committed to developing “workable and appropriate solutions” to drinking water challenges in the province.
Hundreds of municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador are currently on boil water advisories or other water restrictions.
Municipal Affairs Minister Chris Tibbs says the department is working with communities to protect drinking water sources and reduce boil-water advisories.
They’re also working on providing training and certification to water system operators as well as funding for regional operators. “I look forward to working with local leaders, regional service boards, municipalities, local service districts and Inuit community governments to improve drinking water safety across the province.”
The Liberal MHA for Burgeo-Lapoile, Michael King, says more needs to be done to address safe drinking water. He says in too many communities, boil water advisories remain a fact of life. He urged government to “address this long-standing issue.”
