Newfoundland and Labrador Housing has about 350 rental units in need of repairs right now, and the minister responsible believes money allocated in the budget will go a long way in getting those ready for occupancy.
Government has set aside $12.7-million over the next two years to repair those units, and part of that will be hiring 23 new maintenance staff.
Joedy Wall says those new staff will be hired throughout the entire province, and doesn’t believe there will be any issues in recruiting the necessary staff.
He says the job applications are “ready to go,” noting that it usually takes about 50 days to fill these positions. He says most of the new positions are general repair and would not require a red seal certification, though some plumber and electrician positions will. it “will certainly make a huge difference to the housing corporation, it will certainly make a huge difference to our waitlist.”
