The organization which speaks for the skilled workforce likes what it sees in the Bay du Nord deal between government and the oil companies, but it would like to see the timeline on development of a floating dock facility to be based in Bull Arm reduced.
Equinor and BP are giving Newfoundland and Labrador $200-million to go toward the floating dock, which will be designed as a moveable structure to be used at different sites.
However, the money will roll out over five years, a little too far down the road for Bob Fiander, executive director of Trades NL.
“We want to construct that floating drydock and looking out six or seven years is too long. We will miss the opportunity for the defense contracts coming up. Now is the time to strike,” says Fiander.
“We have a good history with the Bull Arm facility and if you couple that with the floating drydock, now we have something to be happy about.”
