RCMP believe a historic military munition discovered in St. George’s may be a WWII-era artillery shell, but they are waiting on officials with the Canadian Armed Forces to confirm.
Corporal Jesse O’Donaghey says the item was discovered along a beach in the area, and is now being monitored by police in Stephenville.
He says “out of an abundance of caution” officers went door-to-door to advise residents in the immediate area to advise them of the situation, and people were given the option to voluntarily evacuate.
O’Donaghey says the RCMP’s Explosives Disposal Unit was initially contacted about the situation and it was determined that “given this type of munition” it is the specialty of the Armed Forces. He says those officials are coming to the province from Halifax and they will safely assess and dispose of the item.
