The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is throwing cold water on the concept of government grocery stores.
NDP Leader Jim Dinn raised the issue in the House of Assembly earlier this week, and Finance Minister Craig Pardy indicated that government was open to any idea that would help Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with affordability.
The Taxpayers Federation, however, says government can’t afford to run grocery stores, calling it a “recipe for empty shelves and a full bill for taxpayers.”
Atlantic Director Devin Drover says the idea of government-run food stores has been tried before, and failed.
He suggests that the best way to make life more affordable is to cut taxes.
